Yacht transport and boat shipping

Shipping your boat with one of these professional boat carriers (the specialised trailers and low-loaders that run the roads every day) is easily the cheapest and fastest way to move it without worries. Whether you’re shifting it a couple of hundred kilometres to a new marina or sending it halfway across Europe, these rigs use custom cradles and heavy-duty tie-downs, so the price stays sensible instead of the crazy cost of a dedicated skipper or long delivery trip.
It’s the choice lots of boat owners end up making in real life: moving house and taking the family cruiser with you, picking up a used motorboat or sailing yacht you bought online from another country, selling one that’s parked far away, heading to a boat show or regatta, shifting to winter storage down south, getting it to a specialist yard for repairs, or just relocating for the season without the hassle of sailing it yourself.

The two main options

  • Open trailer Transport
Most folks pick this because it’s quick to arrange and keeps costs down. Your boat gets secured on a custom cradle or saddle on an open low-bed trailer, tied down tight with heavy straps and padding to stop any movement. It handles all the usual boats really well (motorboats, small yachts, RIBs or sailing boats up to around 9 to 10 meters). Just keep an eye on the beam and weight, because most are fine under 3.5 tonnes. Yeah, it’s out in the open, so it might pick up some road dust or a little spray from the lorries, but these routes see loads like this all the time and the pros really know how to protect the hull and all the fittings.
  • Enclosed Transport
If your boat is something special (a nice luxury yacht, a classic wooden sailer, a high-spec racer or anything you really don’t want exposed) then enclosed is usually the better move. The whole boat goes inside a covered or curtain-sided trailer, so rain, flying stones, road salt, branches or any road grime stays completely away from it. It bumps the price up by about 40 to 80 percent and on quieter routes you might wait a little longer for a slot, but when your boat really matters, that extra shield is hard to beat. Door-to-door is the usual way (they come and collect it from your yard or marina) but if you’re happy to handle the short final leg yourself, terminal-to-terminal can save you a few euros.

How the transport works

You start with a quick quote. Just tell us the basics, like how long and wide the boat is, how much it weighs, whether it’s a motorboat or a sailboat, if the mast needs to come down, if it’s still afloat or already out of the water, where it’s being picked up and dropped off, and the general dates you want it moved.
Book with a bit of notice. One to four weeks ahead often gets you better rates.
Get the boat ready: drain the fuel and water tanks right down, clear out all your personal stuff and loose gear (cushions, electronics, fishing kit, the lot) disconnect the battery, seal every hatch and port, take plenty of timestamped photos from every angle including the hull and deck, and for sailboats arrange to have the mast unstepped and properly padded if it’s required.
On pickup day the driver (or the team with the crane or travel lift if needed) walks round the boat with you, notes any existing marks on the transport document, and secures it properly on the cradle.
During the trip they stick to the good main routes, try to dodge any rough bits, and we track where it is for you to know at any moment.
They give you a heads-up before arrival. You inspect it against your photos and paperwork, and point out anything new before signing off.

Advantages of the shipping your yacht or boat with us

With a carrier the boat travels safely without “feeling” the journey and you stay relaxed. These crews handle boats every day with the right cradles and technique, so the chance of dings or scratches is way lower than a “DIY” solution.

Safety and insurance

Carriers carry cargo insurance that covers accidents, loading issues or road damage (amounts vary, so ask for the certificate upfront). Personal items left on board usually aren’t covered, so empty it properly. Our carrier partners are experienced with boats, their trailers get regular checks, and they know exactly how to secure everything the right way.

Specific needs of your boat

International? Extra paperwork, customs docs, boat registration and possible VAT (most carriers help sort the basics).
Sailboats? Mast removal is often needed for road height; they can organize it or guide you.
Oversized or heavy yachts? Standard trailers have limits; some need abnormal-load permits, escorts or low-loaders (mention dimensions early).
Racing or delicate boats? Enclosed gets priority and extra care for fittings.

At the end of the day, whether it’s your family cruiser you use every summer, the sailboat you’ve been fixing up, or a spotless yacht you baby like a classic car, a good carrier gets it delivered safely, on the dates you agreed, and without you losing sleep over the trip. Simple, reliable, and a genuine load off your mind.
